Multimode fiber optic cable:  This cable is used in most LAN applications, and has many other uses as well.  This class of cable has a number of different core diameters, the most common being 62.5/125 micron fiber

 

 

 

Singlemode fiber optic cable: This is the cable of choice in "longhaul" applications, such as long distance telephone lines, long runs between buildings, or in high speed applications like "sonet" rings.  The fiber diameter is 8.5/125 microns
