Multimode fiber optic cable:
This cable is used in most LAN applications, and has many other uses
as well. This class of cable has a number of different core
diameters, the most common being 62.5/125 micron fiber
Singlemode fiber optic cable:
This is the cable of choice in "longhaul" applications,
such as long distance telephone lines, long runs between buildings,
or in high speed applications like "sonet" rings.
